Sometimes students have a difficult time writing college admission essays because they try to cram their entire life stories into a 500-word essay. According to many experts, this can make the student's essay seem distant and impersonal. If you're having a hard time constructing your essay because of this very reason, consider the following advice to help you narrow down your topic.
Magnify the details. College and MBA application essays shouldn't be long epic stories covering years of information. Counselors understand that you're work in progress. Instead of writing a feature-length movie, focus on a single moment in your life and expand it to represent something larger.
Bring it to life. Consider the sounds, tastes, sights and textures of your story or moment and help the reader experience it through your words. Instead of stating that you're passionate about something, show it through your story.
Share what's important to you. Too often students write applicant essays on what they believe colleges want to hear, instead of writing what is important to them. Remember to be yourself and write about what makes you happy or what is most important to you. Colleges want to get an up close and personal look at your own thoughts, interests and passions.
